CHANCES for Indiana Youth began in 1985 as the Vigo County Task Force on Drug and Alcohol Abuse. The agency was started with a humble $20,000 grant. CHANCES took off with a mission not looking back and is continuing to grow. In 1999, CHANCES merged with Indiana Communities for Drug Free Youth to become the extended agency of CHANCES for Indiana Youth.
Over the years, CHANCES has been recognized both locally and nationally for its efforts in alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse prevention. In 1995, CHANCES was recognized by the National Family Partnership as the “outstanding Local Prevention Program.” Today CHANCES has become well-known in the Wabash Valley, serving 18 counties and sponsoring such statewide programs as Red, Orange , and Blue Ribbon Campaigns, and the Indiana SADD Program. Each year, thousands of Wabash Valley Youth learn about substance abuse prevention through programs of CHANCES for Indiana Youth. In recent years, the giraffe has come to symbolize the work of the agency. The staff and volunteers “stick their necks out for youth.”
In February 2001, CHANCES moved to their new home at the Kelly Center . It is one of architectural treasures of the Farrington’s Grove Historical District in Terre Haute . The former corporate office of Bituminous Materials and Wabash Valley Asphalt was gifted to CHANCES by Thomas and Patricia Kelly in February of 2001, to provide the drug prevention and youth development agency with a permanent home to coordinate services to Indiana youth.
In April of 2008, CHANCES for Indiana Youth entered into an agreement with the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department to operate the Booker T. Washington Community Center.
